The Minnesota Whitecaps wrapped up the 2015-2016 season at Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Saturday, February 13, falling to a young and talented Sabres team by the score of 3-2.
After a scoreless first period, the Whitecaps struck first as defenseman and co-captain Winny Brown skated end-to-end before firing a low wrist shot that beat Shattuck goaltender Aerin Frankel at the 8:51 mark of the second period. It was an unassisted goal.
Then with only 52.5 seconds left in the second, Shattuck’s Alex Woken scored to tie the game at one. Woken was one of four Sabres who helped Team USA win gold at the U18 World Championship in January. Assists went to Alexis Mauermann and Brett Pettet.
In the third period, it was the Whitecaps who broke the tie, as the team’s other co-captain, Brooke White-Lancette, stuffed the puck past Frankel on the power play during a scramble in front. This goal came at 2:44 of the period, putting the Whitecaps on top 2-1. Bethany Brausen and Amy Stech were credited with assists, and it was Katie Frischmann’s shot from the point that started the play.
However, the Sabres responded with two quick goals fifteen seconds apart midway through the third – to tie the game and then take the lead. First it was Pettet who converted a nice feed from Woken on the power play. Then Valerie Turgeon beat Whitecaps’ netminder Alli Altmann, on what would turn out to be the game winning goal with 7:22 remaining.
For the season, the Whitecaps finished 6-6, and the Shattuck loss snapped the Whitecaps 4-game winning streak.
