Although the Whitecaps outshot the UMD Bulldogs 17-11 in the second period, it was the Bulldogs who scored the only three goals in that frame, as they went on to win 4-1 at Amsoil Arena on Saturday afternoon in Duluth.
The first period saw both teams notch power play goals with Ashleigh Brykaliuk scoring for the Bulldogs midway through the period and Whitecap Kendall Coyne burying a shot from the slot with less than five minutes remaining. Hannah Brandt and Jocelyn Lamoureux recorded assists on what would be the Whitecaps' only goal of the game.
Goalscorers for UMD in the second period were Lara Stalder, who scored twice, and Brykaliuk, who got her second of the game. There was no scoring in the third period.
The Whitecaps outshot the Bulldogs 34-33 for the game. Maddie Rooney made several key saves for UMD, especially in the third period. The Whitecaps used three goaltenders on the day, as Alli Altmann played the first period; Julie Friend was in net in the second; and Shelby Amsley-Benzie finished the game in the third.
These same two teams will face each other again in Duluth on January 7th at 3 pm.
