The Whitecaps played Shattuck-St. Mary's, the U19 defending USA Hockey national champions, twice over the weekend and came away with two wins. Saturday's score was 8-3, and Sunday's final was 6-1.
On the weekend, the line of Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson (4-5-9), Kendall Coyne (4-4-8), and Hannah Brandt (2-2-4) accounted for 10 of the 14 Whitecaps' goals, with Coyne notching a hat trick on Saturday and Lamoureux-Davidson getting her own hat trick on Sunday.
In Game 1, the Whitecaps got off to a 5-0 lead in the first period. Defenseman Rose Alleva started the scoring when she snuck to the net on a great passing play with Lamoureux-Davidson and Brandt. Kelli Funk got the second goal of the game, with assists going to Allie Thunstrom and Alleva. Then Thunstrom got her own tally as Winny Brown sent her in on a breakaway and she buried the shot. Two more defensemen, Kelly Seeler and Monique Lamoureux-Morando teamed up to assist on Lamoureux-Davidson's first goal of the weekend. The last goal of the period came from Coyne after she and her linemates converted on a well-played 3 v 2 rush. Both Brandt and Lamoureux-Davidson picked up assists on the play.
The second period was much lower scoring, as each team scored once. It was Coyne getting her second of the day on an unassisted play. The two teams also tied the third period. The Whitecaps scored twice before the Sabres finished the scoring with two of their own. Brandt got the first of those after getting a pass from Seeler, and Coyne completed her hat trick on a nice passing play with Lamoureux-Davidson. Final score was 8-3 and Shelby Amsley-Benzie picked up the win in net.
Game 2 took place the following day, and the final score was 6-1. The three first period goals for the Whitecaps came from the sticks of two graduates of Shattuck-St. Mary's. Lamoureux-Davidson scored twice, with Coyne assisting on both of her goals. In between those two goals was a score by Lamoureux-Morando who converted on a wicked wrist shot from the slot. Twin sister Jocelyne and defenseman Lisa Martinson picked up the assists.
The Whitecaps outscored the Sabres 2-1 in period two. Again, Coyne picked up assists on both tallies as Brandt buried one before Lamoureux-Davidson completed her hat trick. Coyne finished the scoring with the only goal in the third, assisted by Lamoureux-Davidson. Ansley-Benzie played well in goal and picked up her second win of the weekend.
