Whitecaps Fall 4-1 to UMD in Season Opener

Kalli Funk scores shorthanded goal against No. 5 Bulldogs

On Sunday at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minnesota, the Whitecaps faced off against the University of Minnesota—Duluth Bulldogs who were ranked No. 5 in both preseason national polls.  The Whitecaps fell to the Bulldogs, 4-1, in their first game of the season. 

Early in the first period, the Bulldogs took the lead on a power play goal by Michelle Lowenhielm. Two even strength Duluth goals followed - from Ryleigh Houston and Lynn Astrup, respectively, as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Whitecaps bounced back, scoring the only goal in the second stanza, on a shorthanded passing play only four minutes into the period. Becky Kortum found Kalli Funk in tight, and Funk was able to slip the puck past Bulldog goaltender Catherine Johnson. The Whitecaps outshot Duluth 8-6 in the period.

The only goal scored in the third period came from Duluth’s Jessica Healey, giving UMD the 4-1 win. The final shots on goal were 43-26 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Whitecaps were 0-3 on the power play, while UMD was 1-7.

Both teams split their goaltenders during the game. Alli Altmann, who ended with 21 saves, started for the Whitecaps and was followed by Julie Friend, who faced 19 shots, stopping 18.  Jessica Convery played the second half of the game for the Bulldogs.

The Whitecaps are back in action on October 8 against Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, MN. Game time is 1 pm.
