The Whitecaps traveled to Duluth through blowing snow and icy roads on February 3 and returned home with a 2-2 tie over the Bulldogs in one of the team's best games of the season.
UMD opened the scoring at 16:44 of the first period when Sydney Brodt finished off a nice passing play, giving her team the 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
The Whitecaps came back strong in the second and got on the board after Annelise Rice's individual effort to create a turnover in the neutral zone resulted in a goal by Sadie Lundquist. Allie Thunstrom and Rice assisted on a nice play by Lundquist who buried the puck past the Bulldog netminder at 9:07 of the period.
A little over six minutes later, the Whitecaps converted on the power play as defenseman Lisa Martinson fired a wrist shot that Amy Menke deflected into the back of the net. The Whitecaps outshot the Bulldogs in the second period 16-12 and headed into the second intermission leading 2-1.
UMD came out strong in the third and tied the game at two just twenty-three seconds into the period, as Brodt struck again for the Bulldogs. The game would end 2-2, so a scoreless 5-minute overtime followed before UMD won a 3-player shootout.
Final shots on goal were 37-27 in favor of the Bulldogs, as Whitecaps goaltender Julie Friend made 35 saves. The Whitecaps were 1-2 on the power play and the Bulldogs were 0-2.
